Race: Long Distance Race 1

Date: 22nd May 2022

Conditions: E, light winds (1-2)

Race Officer: Patt Head

Safety Boat: Jeremy and Anita

A beautiful day for a sail, with a turn out of 13 boats for the first long distance race of the 2022 season. Fabulous to see people finding crew in the yard and working out who would be sailing what, maximising the number of boats on the water and making sure everyone got a sail.

The course started at the club race line, heading East to do a dog leg around two marks before heading down the coast towards Palm Bay. Many boats attempted the spinnaker on this long leg but it was a little tight and ended up being a long fetch to the mark. The battle at the front of the fleet was closely fought with Don in his Vareo keeping Muc Dhoo (Graham and Lawrence) honest. Hot on both their tails Steve and Lynda were making fast progress in Sylvie the Wayfarer after an excellent start.

The way back from Palm Bay to Margate was an excellent spinnaker run, the wind occasionally filling in, with Madame Tsunami making full use of her 'jerry rigged' spinnaker to make up a little lost time: Although she managed to get past both Wayfarers eventually it was not enough in the end.

The front half of the fleet went for a second lap of the course whilst the second half got a finish.

Special mention to Winter and Isaac in the club Laser2000 for not only completing the race but also for taking the time to give the sails a thorough wash in the sea ;)

1st Place: Don Gray in RS Vareo

2nd Place: Graham and Lawrence in N18

3rd Place: Steve and Lynda in Wayfarer
